The basics for your first game, with a few explainers to watch.

The game in a minute

Each team normally has five skaters and a goaltender on the ice. Score by putting the puck in the opposing net. Regulation play lasts three 20-minute periods; the clock stops at whistles.

Offside: the puck must enter the attacking zone before the attacking players. Icing: sending the puck from behind the centre line past the opposing goal line can stop play and bring the face-off back to your end.

Power play: when a penalty leaves one team short-handed, the other has an extra skater. A minor penalty usually lasts two minutes and can end early if the team on the power play scores.

Overtime, shootouts and icing exceptions depend on the competition. See the IIHF rules and the league’s rules for the full details.
